At the Durability and Design 2014 Conference to be held in Cincinnati, OH, May 20–22, Arkema Inc. will present a technical paper on the achievable decorative service life of Kynar Aquatec® architectural water-based coatings using different resin and pigment technologies. In his presentation titled “Achieving Long-Term Coating Service Life on Metallic and Non-Metallic Building Component Substrates,” Dr. Kurt Wood, a principal scientist in Arkema’s Fluoropolymers research and development, will review the outdoor exposure and accelerated weathering performance of these latex coating formulations on a diverse group of substrates, such as fiberglass pultrusions, vinyl and fiber cement.

The appropriate use of color distinguishes a structure from those nearby. For the building owner, maintaining building aesthetics and curb appeal in a low-maintenance manner is imperative. One aspect of achieving and maintaining curb appeal is color retention.

Building on more than 45 years of continuous Florida outdoor exposure history for PVDF-based coatings on metal, it is possible to quantitatively predict color retention for new waterborne fluoropolymer coatings. These latex coatings can be applied in a factory during the production of the exterior building component or field-applied for touch-up and repair or restoration applications. “We’re committed to helping the building industry transition to highly weatherable, waterborne coating technologies with low levels of volatile organic compounds and long-term color retention properties similar to baked PVDF finishes,” said Dr. Wood. “This paper on the results of our weathering performance study of Kynar Aquatec® architectural coatings using different resin and pigment technologies is an important step in that direction.”

Hosted by Durability + Design magazine, the D+D 2014 Conference will bring specifiers, architects, contractors and facility owners together to learn and share new ideas in a conversation about “Advances in Protective and Aesthetic Technologies for Buildings.”
