Social responsibility

The Responsible Care® Initiative of the Year Award recognizes those companies within the American Chemistry Council (ACC) which have implemented a specific program or activity that demonstrates leadership in the areas of employee health and safety, security or environmental protection in the company.

In order to qualify for the award, an ACC member must first meet the following criteria:

1.  Completion of required metrics by due date.
2.  RCMS®/RC14001® certification completed on time.
3.  Responsible Care Security Code completed on time.
4.  No fatalities in the past 2 reporting years for Employees or Contractors
5.  Total Recordable Injury Rate for Employees and Contractors:
     a. At or Above the size category average for the past 2 years
6.  Positive trend in 2 of the following 3 performance measures
     a. DOT Incidents
     b. Process Safety Incidents (NO Level 1 incidents in the past calendar year)
     c. HAPs Emissions (Same facilities in both years to be reviewed)
7.  Product Stewardship requirements as follows:
     a. Respond “Yes” to having a Risk Characterization process in place.
     b. Respond “Yes” to having publicly available product stewardship summaries for identified High Priority chemicals.

Those ACC member companies who met the above criteria are eligible to submit their specific program or activity for review by the ACC. Five finalists are then selected and invited to the Annual Responsible Care Conference and Expo. The five finalists create a “poster board” presentation for all attendees to review and ask questions. Attendees then vote on the top three.

Arkema Inc.’s Hazard Recognition Program “SWAT” was selected among the top three for this year’s award.  The SWAT program originated in the Arkema Coatings Business Unit, and then was further developed through a Team HES workgroup and piloted across several business units as an additional tool linking other risk assessments such as observations and JSA/JHAs.
