On December 21, 2020, both houses of the U.S. Congress voted to approve the American Innovation in Manufacturing (AIM) Act, setting the stage for phasing down HFC use in the United States consistent with the global effort under the Montreal Protocol. This legislation, supported by both the business community and environmental NGOs, creates a clear framework for an effective national HFC phasedown based on caps and allocations, rather than a patchwork of inconsistent and inefficient state regulations.
The EFCTC hosted a webinar on illegal HFC trade, where Oxera Consulting LLP and EFCTC revealed new data showing that the illegal trade could represent up to 34 million tonnes CO2 equivalent (eqT) – or 33% of the legally allowed quota. The recording of the webinar is available online. See link below.
Arkema announces an innovative and long-term partnership with Nutrien Ltd, the largest integrated agricultural company in the world, for the supply of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride to Arkema’s Calvert City (KY) site. This project has many advantages as it secures a competitive access to anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, the main raw material for fluorine chemistry, it supports the growth of fluoropolymers in the attractive segments of water treatment, electronics and batteries, and it offers greater environmental protection than more traditional production processes.
ARKEMA is engaged in the fight against illegal imports of HFCs (hydrofluorocarbon gases) into the EU. As a member of the European FluoroCarbons Technical Committee (EFCTC), we have just launched a microsite to help raise awareness of the issue and provide actionable solutions. Visit www.stopillegalcooling.eu to learn more! The site provides information to the value chain and other interested parties about how to take action against to stop illegal trade. The intended audience for the microsite is the entire value chain – from manufacturers, traders and distributors to end users and public authorities of the enforcement and regulation side. The microsite is available in 5 languages (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish).
